If you have just deleted something by accident, the good news is simple: deleted tasks in Asana are not gone for good. Asana holds on to them for 30 days, so you have a clear window to get them back. The catch is that Asana has no obvious bin or recycle folder in the sidebar, which is why most people cannot find their deleted tasks at first glance. This guide shows you exactly where deleted tasks in Asana go, and how to restore them in a few clicks.
Where do deleted tasks go in Asana?
When you delete a task, it does not vanish straight away. It moves to a hidden Deleted view that you reach through Asana’s search, not the sidebar. Every task you have deleted in the last 30 days sits in that one place, with its details still attached. Because the Deleted view is tucked away behind search, it feels like the task has disappeared. It hasn’t. You just need to know where to look.
How to recover a deleted task in Asana (step by step)
There are two ways to get a task back, depending on how long ago you deleted it.
Option 1: Undo it straight away. The moment you delete a task, a small message appears at the bottom of the screen with an Undo option. Click it and the task comes straight back. This is the fastest fix if you have just made the mistake.
Option 2: Find it later through search. If you have moved on and the Undo message has gone, do this:
- Click the Search bar at the top of Asana.
- Under Saved searches, choose Deleted. (You can also open Advanced search and filter by deleted items.)
- Find the task in the list of everything deleted in the last 30 days.
- Open the task and click Undelete.

Yes. You have 30 days from the moment a task is deleted to recover it. After that window closes, the task is removed for good and cannot be brought back. The same applies if someone chose Delete permanently instead of a normal delete, which skips the 30-day grace period entirely. In both cases, even Asana support cannot recover the task, so it pays to act quickly when you spot something missing.
How to avoid losing tasks in the first place
Recovering a deleted task is easy enough, but it is better not to lose it at all. A few habits help:
Mark tasks complete instead of deleting them. Completed tasks stay searchable and can be reopened any time.
Agree a simple rule with your team on what gets deleted and what gets archived, so nothing important is removed by mistake.

Inside asana, let’s create a new task. This is our new task and it’s assigned
to me. What we can do is sometimes we make mistakes, sometimes things disappear
sometimes we’re just human and we accidentally do things.
Here we’re going to delete this task.
It’s gone now.
I haven’t deleted it permanently just for the sake of this demonstration but
if you want to find it again and this is a good thing for managers or project managers you
might want to just keep an eye on this every so often.
In the side your favorites which is generally rolled up, one of the items in here is deleted
items and we can see that these are all of the deleted items. These are the ones
I deleted this morning doing some testing and here is our task that we deleted.
If I delete this permanently it’s gone so it’s also gone from the deleted items.
This is great for just finding those accidental things but if people do delete things permanently they
are indeed permanently deleted.

Not in the way most tools do. There is no bin in the sidebar. Deleted tasks live in a Deleted view you reach through the Search bar, and they stay there for 30 days.
Can you recover a permanently deleted task in Asana?
No. If a task was permanently deleted, or if more than 30 days have passed since a normal delete, it cannot be restored. Asana support cannot recover it either.
